Hospice. It’s one of the words family members dread hearing in reference to an elderly Loved One. But when illness takes over, it’s often best to make your Loved One as comfortable as possible while you spend as much time with them as possible.

But when exactly is it time to arrange hospice care for them? If you want to ensure they are receiving the best care, it’s best to set up hospice care as soon as possible.

What is Hospice Care?

When a person is near the end of their life, hospice care provides them with physical, emotional, spiritual, and social support to make their time left on Earth as comfortable as possible. This kind of care usually takes place in a person’s home and can be carried out by physicians, aides, therapists, volunteers, and those of the like.

Who Qualifies for Hospice Care?

Hospice is designated for those who have been given six or fewer months left to live due to terminal illness. This designation must be set by a doctor, and you should arrange hospice care as soon as your doctor gives you the go-ahead.

A person in hospice care also must end any curative treatments, either because they no longer want to receive the treatments or the treatments no longer work. (This only applies to treatments that would attempt to reverse the illness. Symptom and pain management can still be provided.)

What If My Loved One Lives Longer Than Six Months?

That’s ok! Terminal illnesses don’t always run their course as expected, so as long as a doctor documents your Loved One’s progress in their illness, he or she can still receive hospice care.

How Do I Pay for Hospice Care?

Hospice is covered under Medicare and Medicaid, as well as many other private insurance plans. However, if you don’t have coverage under any of those plans, there are a number of non-profit organizations that will cover the costs for you.

When it comes to keeping your senior relatives happy and healthy, you can trust the professional caregivers at Loved Ones. With our “never alone” promise, you can rest assured that your loved ones will receive the best care possible.
